Origin

The record of the origin of the game is not clear on the internet but is still considered to have come from western countries. However, the card game is believed to have originated from another card game, “Conquian”. Conquian is a Mexican game that itself is derived from a Chinese card game Khanhoo.

The name of the game is also debated for a very long period. In the syllabic division of the name, “rum” is a British slang that means Odd or Queer or Peculiar. There are notes on the internet that the game was initially played to win a glass of rum. An early dictionary of rummy has spelt it as “Rhum” or “Rhummy”.

The Indian version of rummy called Paplu is a combination of Rummy 500 & Gin Rummy. The game was misunderstood to be a gambling concept, but later the judgement from the Supreme Court of India declared it a skill game. Hence people have started to live the game at online rummy sites like Deccan Rummy
